Addressing Environmental Issues

  1. Seminar on Sand Reclamation was handled by Mr. Chris Welding, MD, Omega Foundry Machinery Ltd., & Mr. Biswajit Ghosh, GM, Sales & Service Gargi Engineering Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., on 12.06.2013. Number of Participants -35.
  2. Meeting on Sand Reclamation Plant held on 29th July- 2013 at IIF Coimbatore Chapter Office and 25 Companies volunteered to participate in common Sand Reclamation Plant and IIF Coimbatore Chapter requested COINDIA to undertake this project.
  3. Meeting on Common Sand Reclamation Plant, chaired by Mr. N. Visvanathan, President, COINDIA with 30 members participating.
  4. The discussion on Common Sand Reclamation Plant was held in IIF - Cbe chapter office on 07th Oct 2013 at 5.30pm. Around 23 steel foundries actively participated and discussed their views.
  5. Meeting on Sand Reclamation was held on 20.11.2013 and was chaired by Mr. R. Saravanan-Vice Chairman IIF Coimbatore and Mr. N. Visvanathan M/s. Ammarun Foundries. 22 members from various steel foundries were attended the meeting. Mr. N. Visvanathan had given an MOU regarding the Common Reclamation Plant and the participants were asked to discuss and give their suggestions on the MOU later.
  6. Discussion with Sand Reclamation Equipment Suppliers: 2 Members from M/s. Sinto, visited two foundries in Coimbatore and had a discussion meeting with the office bearers in IIF Coimbatore Chapter on 22nd February 2014. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman – IIF Coimbatore Chapter with the discussion on Identifying Sand Reclamation equipment for waste sodium silicate sand generated by steel foundries. The company representatives were asked to submit a Questionnaire for obtaining detailed information from steel foundries.
  7. Meeting on Pollution Control, regarding Online Monitoring System held on 16th August- 2013 at "IIF Hall" with Office bearers and other foundry persons. Number of Participants - 20 members both from Iron & Steel foundry.
  8. Second Meeting on Pollution Control, regarding Online Monitoring System was held on 28th August- 2013 at "IIF Hall". Number of participants- 10.
  9. Meeting with TNPCB - Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass - Chairman IIF Coimbatore Chapter and Shri. C. R. Swaminathan had meeting with TNPCB Chairman on 15th October 2013 and represented on the following.
    • The categorization of MSME is based on gross fixed assets were as the Ministry of MSME, Govt of India has clearly stated the category as per plant & Machinery. The TNPCB Chairman has agreed to look in to this.
    • IIF has requested to waive of online Pollution Control Equipment for foundries that come under medium scale category. The Small Scale industry is already exempted from this is norm.
    • TNPCB norms to be relaxed and be made equal to 2009 norms.
    • Dry filters may be permitted in addition to wet scrubbers in induction furnaces.

Spoken Hindi Programme

  1. First Spoken Hindi program was conducted for the benefit of 59 Foundry Staff and Supervisors with the resource person as Hindi Pandit from Dhakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Shaba along with the services of Mr. K. Boopathy, M/s. Suguna Machine Works. The program started on 23rd October and ended up on 30th November with the schedule of two days a week between 6.00 pm & 8.00 pm. All the participants were provided with a booklet containing 150 commonly used Hindi words (in foundry shop floor) along with pronunciation in local language.
  2. IIF Coimbatore Chapter started 2nd edition of Spoken Hindi - Part time course from 16th April 2014 onwards at IIF Seminar hall from 6pm to 8pm i.e. 3 classes for a week. Totally 10 classes were arranged.

Student Chapter Initiatives

Office Bearers of IIF Coimbatore Chapter discussed on the possibility of involvement of College students as IIF Student Members, on 21st August 2013 at IIF Hall and Mr. R. Saravanan, Vice Chairman was given responsibility for the same.

  • 1st Student Chapter Meeting
    The Institute of Indian Foundrymen – Coimbatore Chapter conducted the 1st Student Chapter Meeting in RVS College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore on 30th January 2014. Mr. R. Saravanan, Vice Chairman - IIF Coimbatore Chapter and Mr. S. Balraj, Hony. Secretary - IIF Coimbatore Chapter attended the meeting. About 60 Participants attended the meeting. Dr. Nithin Devaraaj, Head operation, Larsen & Toubro Limited -Casting Mfg unit, Coimbatore was the speaker of the day.
  • 2nd Student Chapter Meeting:
    The Institute of Indian Foundrymen – Coimbatore Chapter conducted the 2nd Student Chapter Meeting in SNS College of Technology, Coimbatore on 26th Feb 2014. About 100 Participants attended the meeting. Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman – IIF Coimbatore Chapter and Mr. S. Balraj, Hony. Secretary - IIF Coimbatore Chapter attended the meeting. Dr. Nithin Devaraaj, Head operation, Larsen & Toubro Limited -Casting Mfg unit, Coimbatore was the speaker of the day.
  • 3rd Student Chapter Meeting
    The Institute of Indian Foundrymen – Coimbatore Chapter conducted the 3rd Student Chapter Meeting in Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore on 20th March 2014. About 110 students attended the meeting. Mr. R. Saravanan, Vice - Chairman – IIF Coimbatore Chapter and Mr. S. Balraj, Hony. Secretary - IIF Coimbatore Chapter attended the meeting. Dr. Nithin Devaraaj, Head operation, Larsen & Toubro Limited -Casting Mfg unit, Coimbatore was the speaker of the day.

Project Inititative Meeting with GEF-UNIDO

Inception Meeting- GEF-UNIDO-BEE Project on Promoting Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy was held on 24th July 2013 with IIF Office Bearers, UNIDO Representative for India and Regional Director for South Asia., Energy Economist, BEE., National Project Manager GEF-UNIDO-Project, President, COINDIA., Vice president, SIEMA, President and COSMOFAN & their office bearers.


Building Sustainable Entrepreneurship for Young Foundrymen

  1. On 10th January 2014 IIF Coimbatore Chapter conducted a technical session on Awareness / Sensitising programme for young foundrymen, Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman – IIF Coimbatore Chapter welcomed the participants and various faculties. Mr. C. R. Swaminathan, Past President, IIF, the Chief Guest of the day Dr. Nithyanandan Devaraaj - Larsen & Toubro Limited -Casting Mfg unit, Coimbatore was the speaker of the day.
    • Dr. Nithin Devaraaj Larsen & Toubro Limited -Casting Mfg unit, Coimbatore spoke on the various aspects on Foundry - Management perspective.
    • Mr. V. Venkateshwaran, General Manager, Ammarun Foundries, Coimbatore spoke on Foundry Technology-Present and Future and he also explained the present mechanized foundry with a video presentation.
    • Mr. V. S. Saravanan, General Manager, Indoshell Cast Pvt. Ltd, Coimbatore spoke on Employment opportunities in Foundries.
    • Dr. M. Arasu, PSG Polytechnic College gave a brief introduction on Foundry - Institute Interface / Interaction.
    • Mr. S. K. Shankar Raman, Magna Electro Castings, Coimbatore gave a brief Introduction about Center for Education and Training - Opportunity for additional qualification, to polytechnic students.
  2. Second awareness programme on "Building Sustainable Entrepreneurship – Foundry" was conducted for Young Entrepreneurs of Coimbatore on 01st February 2014, Saturday, at IIF-Coimbatore chapter seminar hall. 15 Young prospective business owners i.e. Wards of Coimbatore foundry owners were benefitted out of it. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Jayakumar Ramdass, Chairman – IIF Coimbatore Chapter. The topic was on Building Sustainable Entrepreneurship – Foundry by 'Dr. Nithyanandan Devaraaj – Head Operation, M/s Larsen & Toubro Ltd–Foundry Business Unit, Coimbatore.
